Mark Warburton has blamed #goingfor55 for last season’s title flop.
In another pathetic attempt to deny liquidation the tribute act came up with #goingfor55 to celebrate their first ever campaign in the top flight.
Instantly the slogan was trashed by supporters of every club in the country as they looked at the left-overs that Warbo collected.
By the end of the season Sevco finished 39 points behind the champions with Warbo, Joey Barton and Nico Kranjcar left as footnotes in the gift that keeps on giving.
Warbo, who used to work as a city trader, bought fully into the myth but after joining Ally McCoist, Stuart McCall and Kenny McDowall as victims of the deluded he has a different take on the #goingfor55 fantasy.
“In our first game back in the SPL against Hamilton we walked out on to the pitch before kick-off and all around the stands there were banners saying, ‘We’re going for 55!’ I showed a picture to the guys on Monday to demonstrate what expectation is,” Warbo told The Times
“The atmosphere was unbelievable, but the expectations killed us. They didn’t want to aim for 55, or win No 55 next year, but immediately in our first season. Rangers had been out of the top flight for four years, the wage bill was less than half that of Celtic’s, but that didn’t matter.
“We won two and drew two of our first four games, which I was pleased with given the pressure on a group of young players, but before our fifth game against Celtic I was faced with headlines of, ‘Warburton facing the sack’, ‘Does Warburton deserve to face Celtic?’ We lost and I was accused of insulting Rangers fans. It’s a goldfish bowl like no other.”
Warbo survived another five months to take charge of further defeats from Celtic at Hampden and Ibrox, his playing budget was four times that of Aberdeen who didn’t have a state-of-the-art training complex.
After leaving Ibrox he was appointed manager of Nottingham Forest but was sacked in December and is believed to be considering a return to city trading.
