Barry Ferguson has named James Tavernier among the top seven players in Scotland.

The Sevco full back has made his usual eye catching runs forward but as been regularly exposed at the back where he has little positional awareness or tackling ability.

When Sevco lost a home to Hibs in January Tavernier was the man that needlessly pushed Scott Allan over in the box to concede a penalty.

In the most recent defeat from Celtic the former Wigan ace retreated 20 yards without putting a tackle in before watching Odsonne Edouard curl the winning goal around Wes Foderingham.

Despite Sevco’s well known financial problems there has been no interest in Tavernier but that hasn’t stopped Ferguson from putting the right-back forward as one of his Player of the Year candidates.

There’s no better attacking right back in Scotland and he has improved his defensive qualities this season too,” the former Clyde boss explained in the Daily Record.

There is still scope for him to get better in that area but he has been the best and most consistent Rangers performer in the current campaign.

His assist stats are among the best in Scotland and he has chipped in with seven goals too, albeit a few of them have been penalties.”

Tavernier has played in all seven of Sevco’s home defeats this season.

Scott Brown and Kris Boyd are the leading candidates for the main Player of the Year awards.
