The first doubts about Steven Gerrard taking the Sevco manager’s job have emerged.

The Sun has been leading the way with the unlikely story, claiming on Saturday that he was ‘on the brink’ of taking over from caretaker Graeme Murty.

Moving to Ibrox would defy all logic for a player who has amassed a £50m fortune through careful planning of his playing career.

Apart from Chris Sutton and Davie Provan there has been no in-depth comment on what Gerrard would be letting himself in for with The Sun putting a dampener on the Stevie Gee #goingfor55 express that has taken of on social media.

But reports down south suggest Gers have no better than a 50-50 chance of getting him to quit his role as Anfield academy coach.

Murty has continued to plod along as normal through all of the speculation and could well get the job on a permanent basis.

If Gerrard follows Derek McInnes in rejecting a dream job the next candidates are likely to be Billy Davies, Stuart McCall and Robbie Nielson.
