Ally McCoist has warned Steven Gerrard that there is no money at Ibrox.

In November McCoist’s good pal Derek McInnes turned down the chance to take over from Pedro Caixinha after detailed talks with Stewart Robertson.

After Caixinha blew £10m on players being handed lucrative three year deals the troubled club had to turn to Close Brothers for a £3m loan to see out the season.

That loan, plus interest and charges will have to be repaid from season ticket money leaving a bigger hole in next season’s transfer war-chest.

Sevco have been happy to leak out information about their interest in Gerrard which has provided a useful diversion from Graeme Murty’s disastrous reign in charge of the team.

McCoist joined Alan Brazil on TalkSport this morning with the speculation about Gerrard moving to Ibrox the first topic under discussion.

I do like it but listen, it doesn’t matter who gets that job,” the former Sevco boss warned. “Give it to anyone, give it to Guardiola, Mourinho, give it to Steven Gerrard, if they don’t get the money to buy players they will continue be second to Celtic. That is the bottom line.

I heard a lot of people making comparisons, understandably to 1986 when Graeme Souness took his first manager’s job. But the only comparisons is that they are former Liverpool greats.

When Graeme first came to Rangers two things, two things that matter. First thing was that he played, he was absolutely sensational, Graeme was fantastic and two of his first three signings, he was backed in the transfer market were England captain Terry Butcher and England goalkeeper Chris Woods. Big Colin West was the other.

That is where the similarities end. Put it this way I don’t think that Steven Gerrard will get the financial clout to sign the England captain and goalkeeper.”

Brazil then asked if Kenny Dalglish would help mentor Gerrard (like he did with John Barnes) with McCoist warming to the idea.

He added: “I don’t think that there is any doubt that if Steven took the job that he would take advise from people that he respects in the game, I’m not sure if Brendan (Rodgers) would be one of them.”

It is believed that Gerrard has contacted McInnes, Mark Warburton and the League Managers Association to discuss the Ibrox job.
