Davie Weir now regrets the greatest moment in Sevco’s short history.
At the time nothing could have been sweeter. Cry’s of ‘We Are The People’ and ‘Rangers Are Back’ were interspersed with high fiving and whooping it up.
All because they won a penalty shoot out after 120 minutes where they were outplayed by a mediocre Celtic side.
In April 2016 Weir and Sevco had the world at their feet with delusions at an all time high as fans anticipated storming to the SPFL title 13 months later.
No one at Ibrox offered a word of caution, not Weir or his boss, former city trader Mark Warburton.
Within a year the delusion was over, the management team had resigned, Joey Barton had his pay off with Pip Senderos and Nico Kranjcar left behind draining the life out of the tribute act.
“In hindsight, I think, definitely, beating Celtic probably heightened a lot of people’s expectations in terms of where Rangers were really at, at that time,” Weir admitted to The Scotsman.
“But Celtic reacted to that too. They reacted very well. They went out and got a great manager. We were a Championship team with a lot of lads who were having their first experience of Rangers and were learning about the club and the expectations.
“The biggest thing with finally beating Celtic was that Rangers were on their way back. It was a watershed moment for a lot of people and there was an outpouring after that of ‘Rangers are back’.
“The game itself was really exciting but being honest, Celtic should have won it. They had the better chances.
“Things went our way, even the penalties. Rogic slipped at his penalty.
“There’s obviously an element of luck involved at penalties but it just felt like on that day everything went our way.”
Despite beating Celtic in the semi-final Sevco lost 3-2 to Hibs in the final of the Scottish Cup with only the 2016 Ramsdens Cup Final win during the management of Warburton and Weir.
