Steven Gerrard has promised the gullibles European success.

In five weeks time the new Sevco boss will send out a side mainly consisting of last season’s flops to do battle in the Europa League.

A year ago Pedro Caixinha couldn’t get his stars past Progres Niederkorn but arrogant Gerrard is already talking about reaching the group phase.

Sevco are expected to be seeded for the first qualifying round but after that they’ll need to get past three seeded teams on successive Thursday night’s if they are to pick up a £3m cheque from reaching the group phase.

Josh Windass and James Tavernier will be central to Gerrard’s team building plans as the tribute act plan to add to the glory of their 2016 Ramsden Cup triumph over FC Peterhead.

The fact is we want to be in the group stages,” he told The Sun. “So whatever players are available to me will be expected to get results and I’ll be expected to get results.

It can be difficult to get deals over the line in a short space of time but in terms of that first Europa League game, I don’t prioritise any game. Every game for Rangers is a priority.”

Gerrard will spend this coming week in talks with Mark Allen about signing targets as he begins to discover the real depth of Dave King’s war-chest.
