Dedryck Boyata easily looked after Jamie Vardy and Marcus Rashford as Belgium beat England 1-0 to finish on top of Group H.

The win sees Belgium line up against Japan for a place in the last eight while England take on Group G winners Columbia.

Most of the build up to the match centred on which side wanted to lose most with the thinking being that the runners-up will have an easier passage through the tournament.

If Belgium see off Japan they will meet the winners of Brazil v Mexico while England will take on Sweden or Switzerland if they get past Columbia.

Boyata played in the centre of a Belgian back three until the 74th minute when he moved to the left when Vincent Kompany replaced Thomas Vermaelen.

Former Manchester United prospect Adnan Januzaj scored the only goal early in the second half with the lesson from the match being that the Belgian second string are far stronger than Gareth Southgate’s back-up squad.

The big question now for Boyata is whether he will start against Japan or make way for Manchester City skipper Kompany.
