Leigh Griffiths is close to signing a new contract to extend his Celtic stay.

Under Ronny Deila the striker committed himself to staying with the hoops until 2021 but since then the club has been transformed.

Tom Rogic and Kris Ajer have both recently signed contract extensions with Griffiths also wanting to book in for the Rodgers years.

Competition for striking places has never been tougher but the former Livingston and Dundee striker is looking forward to the challenge of proving his worth.

We are inching further forward on that,” he told The Sun about contract talks. “It’s getting closer. There’s not far to go. We are about 85 per cent done now. A couple of tweaks are needed and then it will be done.

I see my best years at Celtic. I’d like to get to 100 goals. If I don’t get there next season I may as well quit football!

The new contract won’t be a weight off my mind. I’ve got two and a bit years on my current deal, but the fact they are even talking about a new contract gives me joy and delight that I am going to be here for, basically, the rest of my career. When it does get done and signed I will be delighted.”

Griffiths has seen off a number of strikers including Carlton Cole, John Guidetti, Nadir Ciftci, Stefan Scepovic and Colin Kazim Richards on his way to 98 goals in a Celtic shirt.

A run of muscle injuries denied him his 100th goal last season but after following a special fitness programme through the summer he feels that he is almost at peak fitness.

I didn’t go anywhere this summer,” he explained. “A wee tidy-up hernia op a couple of days after Scott Brown’s testimonial put me out for a couple of weeks, then I was back in the gym working on my fitness.

The op was my reason for not going with Scotland to Peru and Mexico. I spoke to Mr McLeish about it and he was fine with it. He wants me fit for September to fire us in the qualifiers.

I still gave myself plenty of rest time and I spent a lot of time with my kids. I’m a home bird anyway. I like being around my family and kids. It’s difficult enough to take them out of school and away.

I feel I’ve had a decent break. I’m ready for the new season.

The calf problem was to do with my hip muscles blocking my full range of movement. As soon as that got released I’ve not felt anything in my calf.

I’ve now been injury free since the second week in March. Hopefully that keeps going.

I’m fit and ready. I can play now. I was sidelined for two weeks, if you can call it sidelined in pre-season, but after it I was ready to go in the gym.”
