On Friday night Leigh Griffiths settled down to enjoy the World Cup action with Spain taking on Portugal.

It was a match with everything- 90 exceptional minutes.

A penalty, a goalkeeping howler, brilliant bullying play from Diego Costa and Nacho putting to use all of the videos that he has watched of Callum McGregor goals.

With just a few minutes left to play Portugal were awarded a free kick and the world held it’s breath.

Everyone knew what would be coming next but would Ronaldo be able to outfox David De Gea from 25 yards out.

Twelve months earlier Griffiths had been in the exact same situation, his opponent was Joe Hart.

Ronaldo’s obviously been watching my free-kicks on YouTube,” the Celtic striker joked to The Sun.

The World Cup’s been good. The biggest shock for me so far was Poland, but there could be more surprises to come.”

There was one more surprise to come for Hart at Hampden last June- Griffiths did it again with another free kick.

As the Manchester City watches the World Cup from afar he will never get over how Griffiths ended his international career.
