Brendan Rodgers feels that Marvin Compper’s Celtic career could be about to kick-off.

The defender was bought from RB Leipzig for £1m in January but only managed to play 83 minutes of a Scottish Cup tie against Morton after his heralded arrival.

Over the last two Champions League qualifying campaigns Celtic have been beset by problems in defence largely caused by injuries.

Kolo Toure, Nir Bitton, Eoghan O’Connell and Kris Ajer have been called into action with Rodgers looking to find a settled combination to that area of his side.

It was only 45 minutes against a Second Division Austrian side but against Vorwarts Compper put in a steady, assured performance that gives the Celtic boss something to build around.

Marvin got the game time as did the other players,” Rodgers told the Daily Record. “We look for personality in our players and a lot came in and played with that. We have a lot of young, exciting players in that position along the back three.

They are fast, quick, strong and aggressive. They are all alert, developing and improving, but it is great. We have a good fight on with them all.”

On Saturday Celtic take on Bohemians Prague in the second match of their Austrian trip as the hoops prepare to face their first competitive match when they take on Alashkert on July 10.
