Brendan Rodgers is in no rush to bring in a new centre half.

After shipping in goals during the group phase of the Champions League and crashing tamely out of the Europa League to Zenit St Petersburg most hoops fans are looking to see the defence strengthened.

Rodgers admitted at the club AGM in November that it was an area of concern, especially with the injuries suffered two season’s running during the Champions League qualifiers.

Celtic faced Astana in the Champions League play-off with a defensive pairing of Kris Ajer and Nir Bitton with the hoops boss determined to avoid a re-run of that movie.

Marvin Compper and Jack Hendry were signed in January while Ajer is developing into a very commanding centre half.

Discussing his transfer plans the Irishman told Celtic TV: “The key was to get the likes of Tom (Rogic, who signed a new deal) and Odsonne in.

Like always, there are a few areas that we want to be better in and improve.

It’s never easy because the team we have is developing very well and I like to develop our own players.

Everyone goes on about a new centre-half, but I don’t think they’d be happy with Billy McNeil playing centre-half!

We have young players developing very well and they will continue to, but we have to be in the market to bring the best possible players to Celtic but there are two conditions: availability and affordability.

We are always on the lookout.”

Celtic fly to Austria on Monday to step up their pre-season preparations with three low key friendly matches.
