All change at SPFL as Lawwell returns to power

|

A year after deciding to step down from the board of the SPFL Peter Lawwell has been voted back onto their board of directors.

Lawwell, Alan Burrows of Motherwell and Dundee chief John Nelms have been voted on by their fellow SPFL Premiership clubs in what can only be seen as a spectacular vote of no confidence in the previous board which consisted of Anne Budge, Stewart Robertson and Les Gray of Hamilton.

The three lower league directors all retained their seats.

Last year Lawwell’s decision to step down was viewed as an attempt to bring about change from ‘outside the tent’.

In September he had a very public disagreement with former SFA chief executive Stuart Regan over various compliance matters including the 2011/12 UEFA licence awarded to Rangers (IL) despite owing money to HMRC.

Last week the SFA announced that the Notice of Complaint about that issue could only be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport with no decision taken on whether to proceed with that action.

Lawwell’s return and the removal of three board members is bound to create speculation that the SPFL could be about to publish the notorious Five Way Agreement from 2012 which provided Sevco Scotland with the membership of the old Rangers club.

The new board was elected at the AGM of the SPFL this morning.
