Celtic have been dealt another defensive blow with Marvin Compper ruled out of the Champions League ties with Rosenborg due to injury.

The former RB Leipzig man played for 45 minutes against Standard Liege on Saturday but missed the home tie with Alashkert due to an abductor problem.

With Jozo Simunovic suspended for the visit of Rosenborg Compper could have been given his big chance with Celtic’s defensive options getting limited by the game.

Last night Jack Hendry moved in to partner Kris Ajer in central defence with that pairing almost certain to be in place for the visit of Rosenborg next week.

Discussing Simunovic’s red card Rodgers told The Sun: “It gives us a problem but that’s all it’s been for us.

Every pre-season there is always an issue with centre-halves.

Marvin has a problem with his abductor, so we’ll see how that is, but it’s highly unlikely he’ll be available.

With Boyata, I don’t know – I’ll need to asses that over the next few days.”

Dedryck Boyata was on the bench for Belgium against England on Saturday but could be asked to cut short his holiday to help Celtic out against Rosenborg.

Mikael Lustig is also on World Cup leave but his last match was ten days earlier than Boyata’s.

Next in line for a place in central defence is Stephen Welsh who was in the squad that travelled to Austria and played against Shamrock Rovers and Standard Liege.
