Steven Gerrard has admitted that Sevco has no more money for new players.

Two more loan signings have been pushed through- although Umar Sadiq is still waiting for international clearance- ahead of tomorrow’s Europa League qualifier against Shkupi of Macedonia.

Gerrard has only been able to pay transfer fee for Conor Goldson, Nikola Katic and Jamie Murphy which takes his spending to around £5m.

A year ago Pedro Caixinha was given double that amount to spend with the signing of Bruno Alves the most celebrated.

The former Cagliari defender turned out to be a massive flop with Sevco having to pay off a large part of his contract to move Alves on

Discussing the situation with Alves Gerrard told the Daily Record:

“His contract has been terminated mutually today. Both parties are really happy and we move on. He’s about to be unveiled at Parma and we wish him all the best.

“(Will this free up money for transfers?) I don’t think so. Bruno leaving doesn’t open the door for me to go and sign more and more players. The board and the chairman have been very supportive. We had to make changes and they’ve backed me very well so far, I’m very appreciative.”

Gerrard refused to discuss ‘speculation’ over interest in Millwall defender Jake Cooper.

Against Shkupi the new Ibrox boss will have to give debuts to half a dozen new players or put his trust in the men that flopped for Caixinha and Graeme Murty.
