Celtic’s pre-season match against Marseille was abandoned tonight as a storm hit South Shields.

Tommy McIntyre’s side were trailing 1-0 when the teams were taken off in the 69th minute.

After 30 minutes in the dressing room the referee announced that the match would be abandoned with 20 minutes left to play.

Rather than come back tomorrow for the remainder of the game the tie was awarded to Marseille meaning that Celtic will play in the third place play-off on Sunday.

Hosts South Shields will take on Southampton on Saturday afternoon before Sunday’s final and third place play-off.

The competition is for u-23 players giving McIntyre’s squad the chance to play against older more physical opponents ahead of their Irn Bru Cup tie away to Annan Athletic on August 14.

Before that match the young hoops will face Albion Rovers at Cliftonhill on August 7 in the Jock Stein Friendship trophy.
