Fabio Cardoso is laughing all the way to the bank after getting his Sevco contract ‘mutually consented’.

The 24-year-old was a £1.5m signing from Vitoria Setubal a year ago but has negotiated a pay off on the remaining two years of his contract with no club prepared to pay a transfer fee or take him on loan.

Cardoso made 18 appearances last season but was left out of the squad that Steven Gerrard took to Spain for pre-season training and also left out of the list of players registered for the Europa League.

After Pedro Caixinha was sacked Cardoso’s appearances became more limited, memorably he was involved in the 3-2 defeat from Celtic in March where he made a despairing, and failed lunge, to sop Moussa Dembele from equalising.

Despite the best efforts of Director of Football Mark Allen Sevco haven’t taken in a penny in transfer fees with Cardoso joining Bruno Alves and Micky O’Halloran in being paid to leave.

The two Lee’s, Hodson and Wallace are expected to be next in line for pay-offs.
