Celtic have been presented with a £9m dilemma over Dedryck Boyata.

According to a report in The Times Fulham have formally tabled a bid for the defender who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Boyata was given an extended break following Belgium’s World Cup exploits but is back in contention for a place against AEK Athens on Wednesday night.

That match falls less than 24 hours before the English transfer window closes.

In most circumstances a £9m bid for a player with 10 months to run on his contract would be snapped up but progress to the group stage of the Champions League could bring in close to £40m for Celtic.

A year ago Brendan Rodgers described Boyata as his first choice central defender but Celtic will have to decide whether to accept £9m or risk losing the player in January for around half that fee.

In similar circumstances Stuart Armstrong was sold to Southampton for £7m but that move had been on the cards for almost a year.

Having failed to bring in any defenders during the current transfer window Rodgers may be loathe to sell Boyata despite the business case to be made for accepting an offer of £9m.
