Celtic look like missing out on John McGinn with the Hibs midfielder undergoing a medical at Aston Villa.
Reports of interest from Brighton and Blackburn turned out to be groundless but the transfer saga took a dramatic turn yesterday when the player travelled to Birmingham.
Celtic reacted to that by matching the £2.7m bid made by Villa but as Brendan Rodgers suggested on Tuesday the advantage seemed to be with the English Championship side.
Speaking at lunchtime Neil Lennon told The Scotsman: “He went down to Birmingham, I think he is having a medical there.
“A fee has been agreed. I don’t know if personal terms have been agreed yet. I think Celtic have matched the offer but I think Villa are in the driving position at the minute.”
Missing out on McGinn is unlikely to hamper Celtic’s hopes of success in the season ahead but it does highlight a division within the club.
Rodgers has clearly identified the player as someone he wanted to work alongside with all of the signs being that the player was interested in a move to Celtic.
With three weeks left in the transfer window attention will be on Celtic to see who they can sign after a failed very public attempt to sign the Hibs midfielder.
