Fresh details have emerged in the John McGinn saga that go a long way towards explaining Brendan Rodgers’ anger over the failure to sign the midfielder.

According to a report in the Celtic Star the Hibs midfielder visited the Irishman at his home in May with the pair of them remaining in contact through the summer.

With Stuart Armstrong sold to Southampton Rodgers had raised much more than was required to meet the transfer fee from Hibs with the bonus that he could send Eboue Kouassi out on loan.

It seemed a text book transfer move, a player within budget and keen to come to Celtic.

As pre-season developed into European qualifiers the transfer failed to develop as anticipated as one fan revealed  to the Celtic Star:

McGinn signed for Aston Villa during Celtic’s 1-1 draw with AEK Athens.

Since the transfer window opened Celtic have signed Scott Bain, Odsonne Edouard and Emilo Izaguirre with Stuart Armstrong and Erik Sviatchenko moved out.
