Rodgers makes unexpected warning

The mantra for every transfer window is to come out of it stronger than when it opened.

In raw terms Celtic have added Lewis Morgan and lost Stuart Armstrong and Patrick Roberts.

Between those facts Odsonne Edouard is at the club on a permanent basis, Tom Rogic is on a new deal and interest in Kieran Tierney has been held at bay.

Looking across his squad Brendan Rodgers has admitted that it’s not as strong as last season which many could interpret as a plea or request for backing from elsewhere in the club.

Two years ago it wasn’t so difficult to improve on the squad that Rodgers inherited from Ronny Deila as he revived most players and strengthened through Scott Sinclair and Moussa Dembele.

Last year Olivier Ntcham brought an instant upgrade in the centre of the park with Rodgers looking to find that sort of upgrade again.

Speaking candidly ahead of tonight’s Champions League qualifier against Rosenborg the hoops boss told The Sun: “I think when our supporters sit back and have a look at it, they will probably be thankful that we have continuity.

We have lots of players that are working very well, that are developing.

What we need is quality and that is important but I don’t really want to bring in players that are going to come in and just stockpile a group.

The club are always going to have to be mindful of the types of salaries that they can pay but it is the job of the manager, the coach, to try and push to get the possible players we can in and help keep the club moving forward.

I don’t run the club and the club have had a very clear structure of how they work.

We aren’t as strong a squad as we were last year. We have lost players, but we all push to try and get in the best quality that we can.”

Once the English transfer window closes next Thursday Celtic are expected to increase their transfer activity.

So far the hoops have had two bids for John McGinn rejected by Hibs and strongly linked with a move for Australian teenager Daniel Arzani.
