SPFL faces telly blackout

Foreign football channels look like having their SPFL supply switched off this season.

In 2014 the SPFL sold the overseas rights to Scottish matches to media firm MP & Silva for the miserable sum of around £2m a year.

MP & Silva then resold the rights across the globe setting up deals with broadcasters such as BEIN Sport in the Middle East and Fox Sports in the USA.

With their partner company now facing administration the legal supply of matches could be cut with no coverage expected of the SPFL fixture between Aberdeen and Sevco at the weekend.

Should MP & Silva go burst it will allow the SPFL to renegotiate a new deal on more realistic terms.

Celtic matches used to available from Setanta who piped them in to pubs and supporters clubs in North America and elsewhere.

The introduction of Celtic TV and availability of matches on mainstream channels has hit supporters clubs hard with fans able to watch from home.

With the Glasgow derby fixture just over a month away any international blackout could create a rush of subscriptions for Celtic TV.
