Dave King has ignored Steven Gerrard’s plea for two new players.

After watching his side beat Wigan 3-0 last week the new Sevco boss told a media conference that he wanted two new players in time to face Aberdeen, preferring to bring them in on Monday.

Today Sevco opened their SPFL campaign with the same squad of player that Gerrard used against Wigan.

Since signing up for his Revolution in May Gerrard has been able to pay out transfer fees for three players with the deal for Jamie Murphy agreed to in January.

On June 13 Sevco signed Connor Goldston from Brighton- since then no transfer fees have been paid out. Attempts to sign Jake Cooper and Kean Bryan have fallen through.

Since getting Gerrard to agree to become manager King has been dealt three significant financial blows

a) Failure to raise £6m from the June share issue

b) Failure to bring in a penny from shirt sales after trying to exclude Sports Direct

c) Mark Allen’s failure to bring in any transfer fees from last season’s flops with Bruno Alves, Micky O’Halloran and Fabio Cardoso paid up to leave the company.

After two relatively straightforward Europa League qualifiers the action begins to get serious this afternoon away to Aberdeen.

Two more qualifiers against Maribor fall either side of a visit from St Mirren with Gerrard having no option but to go into those games with the only option to strengthen his squad coming from the loan market.
