Dundee Supporters Association have filed a formal complaint to the SFA about Steven McLean.

The match referee was at the centre of attention on Saturday when he awarded Kilmarnock a penalty for an incident that has resulted in Jordan Jones being offered a two match suspension for simulation.

According to the Dundee fans organisation McLean shouldn’t be given any Kilmarnock matches since his dad, Stuart, played for the Ayrshire side in the 1980s.

McLean of course has much more recent football connections with his brother Brian starting his career with Rangers (IL) while Alex McLeish was in charge.

Brian hit the headlines when he made a couple of appearances for the ‘Northern Ireland’ u-21 side before discovering that he wasn’t eligible for the statelet.

Neil McCann made his anger known at Steven McLean at the final whistle with Dundee’s official fan group making their concerns known to the SFA.

Kenny Ross, chairman of the DSA told The Sun: “Several of our members have contacted me to express their concerns over this and we think it’s only right to pass them on to the authorities.

And I do think there is reason to question the validity of this appointment when the referee so clearly has family connections to Kilmarnock.

If nothing else it puts him in a difficult position when you get a decision like Saturday’s.

I know that Steven McLean’s brother Brian played for Dundee United, Ross County and a few other clubs and he was not allowed to take charge of games involving teams he was at.

You think the same common sense approach could have been applied to his dad’s old team.”

McLean was the referee at the Celtic v Inverness Caley Thistle Scottish Cup semi final in 2015, a year later he took charge of the final between Hibs and Sevco.
