Steven Gerrard fears that his title challenge may be stalled on the road.

A week ago the former Liverpool coach was basking in the glory of moving into second place on the back of a home win over St Johnstone.

This morning Sevco are languishing in sixth place ahead of next week’s visit from league leaders Hearts.

Catching the Edinburgh side wasn’t part of Gerrard’s remit, putting in a strong challenge to Celtic earns him a salary of over £2m a year but on the road his side have failed to win in four attempts.

Draws at Aberdeen and Motherwell have been followed by defeats at Celtic and Motherwell to turn the heat up on Gerrard and his summer signings.

While Celtic struggle to find form to the excitement of the vultures desperate for a slip Brendan Rodgers’ side are two points ahead of the tribute act and showing signs of hitting form.

After losing 1-0 at Livingston Gerrard told The Sun: “It is still early in the season so we can recover from a result like this, like we recovered from the Old Firm loss but this can’t keep on happening.

When we come and play teams like Livingston we have to try to take maximum points, otherwise we won’t be in the title race.

If we play like that, the problem will be away from home because we were nowhere near good enough.

We weren’t Rangers, we weren’t exciting.

We either under-hit or over-hit crosses. They defended well, we didn’t attack the right spaces. There was just nothing in the final third.”

October promises to be a demanding month for Sevco with matches against Hearts, Hibs and Kilmarnock in-between Europa League ties culminating in a Betfred Cup semi-final against Aberdeen.
