After two days of Griff-bashing it probably comes as something of a shock to BBC Scotland’s sports team to discover that their favourite mouthpiece once walked out on his nation.

Kris Boyd’s opinion has been sought on a whole range of issues with the bottom of the barrel scraped when the state broadcaster started to ask about the names of his eight dogs.

All sort of allegations have been made at Griffiths since he met with Alex McLeish to explain why he wouldn’t be in the Scotland squad to face Israel and Portugal.

Whatever they think of the Celtic striker he had the guts to meet up with the Scotland boss to tell him face to face why he wouldn’t be involved.

Back in October 2008 George Burley wasn’t given that courtesy by Boyd.

After being left on the substitute bench during a 0-0 draw with Norway, made famous for a miss by Chris Iwelumo, Boyd decided to retire from Scotland duty- while Burley remained in charge.

Rather than speak to the Scotland boss the then Rangers (IL) striker opted to make a phone call to SFA chief executive Gordon Smith.

Explaining his reasoning Boyd said: “I left a message on George Burley’s phone last night and he hadn’t got back to me.

“I didn’t think just leaving a message was very professional, so I spoke with Gordon Smith and informed him of my decision.”

He added: “I will not be playing for George Burley again, but I hope to be back in a Scotland jersey again one day.”

Boyd went on to win three further Scotland caps but failed to score in matches against the Czech Republic, Sweden and Liechtenstein.
