Scott Brown and Jonny Hayes have shown their support for James McClean as the Irishman is hounded over his decision not to wear a poppy.

Twenty years ago Remembrance Sunday was a time for solemn reflection as those that lost their lives in two world wars were respectfully remembered.

Since Tony Blair and his new Labour bedfellows decided to back an illegal war on Iraq the poppy has been dragged into a tacky annual display of triumphalism.

Football clubs have been forced into elaborate commemoration services with the poppy added on to football strips.

Strangely enough no other industry seems effected, supermarket workers get on with their jobs as normal, buses and trains don’t display poppies, at the cinema and theatre there are no minutes silence in respect of the fallen.

As a native of Derry McClean has first hand experience of the excesses of the British war effort, he knows of families robbed of parents and children and the cover ups to deny justice.

At Sunderland, Wigan and Stoke City the winger has been the target of the poppy fanatics, despite the abuse and hatred he shows no sign of compromising his principles for a quieter life.
