Alex McLeish has defied all logic by calling up Scott Bain to the Scotland squad ahead of Saint Johnstone keeper Zander Clark.
The Celtic stand-in has been called up into the Scotland squad to face Albania and Israel after Craig Gordon joined Jon McLaughlin of Sunderland in pulling out.
Bain was involved in the end of season jolly to Peru and Mexico but has made just one Premiership appearance- today in the 0-0 draw with Livingston.
Clark kept the scoreline semi-respectable when Celtic won 6-0 away to St Johnstone and bounced back with five successive clean sheets to help shoot the Perth side into the top half of the table ahead of Hibs and Aberdeen.
McLeish called in Jamie MacDonald on Friday but 24 hours later he found himself relegated to the bench at Kilmarnock as Stevie Clarke went for Daniel Bachmann in goals to face Hearts.
Reacting to MacDonald’s call up Tommy Wright told The Sun: “First of all I’m devastated for Zander, it’s a decision which beggars belief really. When we saw he’d been overlooked everyone was gobsmacked.
“That’s taking nothing away from Jamie MacDonald, who is a very good keeper and someone I have tried to sign in the past but on form, Zander has been outstanding.
“I am probably doing Zander harm by speaking out but it really beggars belief that they see a 32-year-old goalkeeper as the future, especially when the other two are in their mid-30s.
“St Johnstone fans have said to me many times that players don’t get capped at this club and unfortunately they seem to be right.
“We are not a fashionable club, that’s pretty clear. Zander has been overlooked previously for people who aren’t nearly as good as him.
“On current form, I can’t see another keeper playing as well as Zander in this league.”
Scotland face Albania on Saturday with Allan McGregor the first choice keeper.
