Chris Sutton has twisted the knife on Graeme Souness- 16 years after the former Blackburn boss suffered one of the most painful defeats of his career.

After losing 1-0 to Celtic in the first leg of their 2002/03 UEFA Cup tie Souness told his players that the result was a travesty, that the match had been men against boys.

In the mixed zone after the match one of the Blackburn players repeated that phrase setting the scene for the second leg.

Martin O’Neill’s side wasn’t short of big characters, Neil Lennon, Alan Thompson, Bobo Balde and Chris Sutton never struggled for motivation. Having Henrik Larsson in the dressing room always helped.

Seven thousand Celtic fans out-sung and out-supported the locals in one of the darkest corners of Lancashire.

Sutton and Larsson scored the goals as the travelling support taunted Souness. 16 years on the victory is just as sweet.
