After having his defending compared unfavourably to a 12-year-old Conor Goldson is set to be ‘rested’ for 38-year-old Gareth McAuley.

A month ago the Beckenbaur from Brighton was being tauted for an England call up but after a disastrous run of one win in five matches Goldson is the fall guy.

At the first sign of adversity Steven Gerrard has quickly chucked his players under a bus as he attempts to protect his own reputation.

Goldson scored two own goals as Sevco crashed to a 4-3 defeat against Spartak Moscow as the image of an iron curtain defence was demolished by the club sitting in sixth place in the Russian League.

Among the bizarre decisions that Gerrard made in Moscow was the sight of veteran McAuley being thrown on in stoppage time with Sevco having a corner.

Asked about Goldson Gerrard told The Sun: “Connor is constantly in my face saying, ‘Don’t give me a rest, don’t give me a rest, don’t give me a rest’ but there will be a time when I have got to help him.

“He won’t like that but it is my job. Connor has played a lot of games but that’s the case for a lot of these players. This is the squad we have put together.”

After being left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad for the November internationals Goldson will have 13 days rest between tomorrow’s match with Motherwell and the home match against Livingston.
