Celtic can expect a nice dividend from Jose Mourinho’s departure from Manchester United with Filip Benkovic now almost certain to stay in Glasgow for the remainder of the season.

During the summer transfer window Mourinho made Harry Maguire of Leicester his number one transfer target after an impressive World Cup from the defender.

Leicester resisted bids believed to be upto £50m for the defender with new signing Benkovic sent on loan to Celtic just before the close of the transfer window.

United’s defensive problems this season have been well documented with renewed interest in Maguire expected from Mourinho when the January transfer window opened.

At 9.45am this morning United announced that the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss had been sacked with the club now looking to bring in a caretaker until the summer.

No extensive business is expected in January with players highly unlikely to be interested in signing for a club under a caretaker manager.

Leicester have a clause in Benkovic’s loan deal that he can be recalled in January but with Maguire now almost certain to stay on until the summer the young Croatian defender looks certain to stay at Celtic until May.
