The chances of Celtic signing Timothy Castagne from Atalanta have been reduced with the defender believed to prefer a move to England or Germany.

On Wednesday the Belgian’s name started to appear on social media and message-boards with a number of publications running with the story on Thursday morning.

A £6m fee was quoted for Castagne who has only played in nine matches this season for Atalanta.Celtic had been expected to sign a right-back during the January transfer window but the re-emergence of Anthony Ralston may have reduced the urgency to fill that position.

Castagne is under contract with Atalanta until June 2020 but will need to be playing first team football to get his career back on track and will be aware of how Brendan Rodgers revived the career of Dedryck Boyata.

Atalanta are in no rush to move the defender on but the chance of a quick profit on a £3m signing from the summer of 2017 could bring them to the negotiating table.
