Celtic defender left in the dark over contract

|

With six months left on his contract Mikael Lustig is still in the dark about a new contract.

The defender joined Celtic seven years ago on a Bosman deal from Rosenborg and has been the regular right-back under three different manager.

Celtic have been strongly linked with a number of right-back’s during the last two transfer windows but so far no moves have been made.

AIK Stockholm have been strongly linked with a move for Lustig who is holding back on signing a pre-contract deal elsewhere in the hope of landing a new Celtic contract.

“There’s nothing really to say there, because it’s nothing,” he told Swedish publisher Expressen. “I have a contract with Celtic and hope to extend here. The ball lies with them. If they want me to continue, I will say here.”

On the assumption that he would sign for AIK Stockholm he added: “No, if that happens, we’ll see (a move back to AIK). Nothing is clear that we should move home in that case, we might have another option to go abroad but I hope to stay at Celtic. If I don’t, I’m sure I will find something that I will enjoy.

“The important thing is that it should be good for the family and also for football.”

Lustig and Brown are the main players out of contract this year and are expected to be offered new deals.

Cristian Gamboa, Scott Allan and Dorus de Vries won’t be offered new contracts while Dedryck Boyata’s future lies elsewhere with his agent not interested in talks with Celtic.

It has been reported that Celtic has a one year option to extend Lustig’s contract but that would need to be exercised this month.
