Celtic look like missing out on signing £6m rated Belgian internationalist Timothy Castagne.

The Daily Mail reports:

Efforts to strengthen in defence have suffered a set-back, however, after Italian club Atalanta reiterated their reluctance to sell right-back Timothy Castagne.

The Serie A side held talks with Castagne’s representative last week, warning it would take an exceptional offer to persuade them to sell the 23-year-old Belgian international in the current window.

Signing a 23-year-old from one of the five richest leagues in Europe always seemed an ambitious move with Castagne believed to prefer a move to England or Germany if he isn’t making progress with Atalanta.

Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa are both out of contract at the end of this season with Anthony Ralston making just two first team appearances this season.

Celtic had been expected to sign a right-back during the summer transfer window with Cristiano Piccini believed to be the top target but he opted for Valencia after an agreement appeared to have been reached between Celtic and Sporting Lisbon.

Brendan Rodgers has gone on record saying that he was looking to bring in two new strikers during the January transfer window, ideally new signings will be able to join up with the squad in Dubai where a week of training begins on Saturday.
