Celtic will need to match the €10m transfer fee paid for Odsonne Edouard to sign Timothy Castagne from Atalanta.

Signing a right-back has been a priority for the best part of a year with Brendan Rodgers not convinced by Mikael Lustig, Cristian Gamboa or Anthony Ralston.

Castagne has been in and out of the Atalanta side this season and would represent a massive show of ambition if he could be attracted to the SPFL.

Initial reports suggested that a fee of £6m would be required but that now appears to be on the light side according to Belgian website RTBF.

The leaders of Celtic are therefore thinking of Timothy Castagne to strengthen the right flank of the Bhoys defence . If the door seems open for a transfer given the statements of the player, it will still take out the chequebook to offer his services. Gazetta Dello Sport announces that the compensation could be set at 10 million euros.

Celtic haven’t made any moves to offer new contracts to Lustig or Gamboa although there is an option to extend the Swede’s deal by 12 months.

Ralston failed to make an appearance until the hoops faced Motherwell the week before Christmas and would be the fans choice to play at right-back if no transfer business is completed this month.

Castagne has made seven first team appearances this season including the last two matches against Juventus and Sassuolo.
