Celtic ‘target’ Micah Richards has made just 45 first team appearances in the last seven years.

In 2006 he made his England debut after just 28 appearances for Manchester City. There were high expectations that this was the launchpad of a brilliant career but the last half dozen years have proved to a massive anti-climax.

Richards picked up 13 full caps and played a big part in City’s dramatic 2011/12 title win but that proved to be the peak of his career with a slow descent ever since. A loan spell at Fiorentina for season 2014/15 fizzled out after 10 matches with Aston Villa coming in with a four year contract when he was freed by City.

It’s over two years since Richards played for Villa with just six more pay days to go until his contract expires. According to the Birmingham Mail social media has put two and two together to suggest a move to Celtic!

Brendan Rodgers’ need for a right-back and central defender naturally points towards someone with Richards CV but it’s likely to be at least a month before he could be ready for first team action.

Brendan Rodgers isn’t likely to be prepared to take that sort of risk but at just 30-years-old Richards would be a relative youngster if he was to sign into a well known retirement home in the south side of Glasgow.
