As Ian Maxwell issues a lengthy statement justifying the standard of refereeing and the mysterious workings of the Compliance Officer, Livingston are the latest club to criticise the SFA.

During last week’s defeat from Dundee, Steve Lawless was booked for simulation (diving) by referee Greg Aitken.

After appealing against the decision the yellow card has been withdrawn but there won’t be any penalty for Livi with the points lost adding to their recent poor run of form.

“There is no benefit to us to get a thinly veiled apology and a yellow card rescinded,” Gary Holt told the BBC. “Every man, dog, woman, boy, granny, grandpa knew it was a penalty apart from the referee.”

Simulation and mistaken identity are the only bookings that can be appealed against but all of these rules are agreed by clubs.

Changes can be proposed at the AGM of the SFA but it’s rare for any club to follow up their anger during the season into making a proposal for change at the AGM.

Tomorrow Aitken will referee the Falkirk v Dundee United match, on Wednesday he will be in charge of Dunfermline against Partick Thistle on Tuesday.
