Alex McLeish’s nightmare week has just got worse with Steven Fletcher contradicting the excuse given for missing out on international duty.

The Scotland boss has came under attack after a dismal double header that saw Scotland humbled by Kazakhstan then limp to a 2-0 win away to San Marino.

Before the squad was announced McLeish spoke out positively about Allan McGregor only to find out the night before he named his squad that the Ibrox keeper was no longer interested in international football.

When he did get round to naming his squad McLeish explained that Fletcher was missing on instruction from his manager at Sheffield Wednesday but right on cue today the striker has explained that it was his own decision not to report for international duty.

I am passionate about playing for my country and I made the decision with a very heavy heart,” he told the Daily Record.

“With the knee injury I had, it held me back for a long time, and I couldn’t take a chance on aggravating it again. It would just put me back to square one again.”

There has been no comment from anyone inside the SFA about the latest international results despite widespread criticism and the need to sell tickets for a home match with Cyprus on June 8.
