Brendan Rodgers and Peter Lawwell missed a last stormy clash at Lennoxtown by a couple of hours as a dramatic chapter in Celtic’s history was played out.
The new Leicester City boss walked out on Celtic at lunchtime on Monday without a backward glance with the club chief executive turning up at the training ground in mid-afternoon to begin the fire-fighting operation.
Around them the Celtic players, described by Rodgers as ‘friends for life’, were left in the lurch at an incredible course of events.
John Kennedy was briefly left to hold the fort before reinforcements arrived with business resumed at Tynecastle on Wednesday night thanks to a dramatic late goal from Odsonne Edouard that maintained an eight point cushion at the top of the SPFL table.
The last few days will never be forgotten as images were shredded by actions as Kennedy explained in the Daily Record:
“Did Brendan speak with the players? No. He left about Monday lunchtime. He came out to training as normal and, to be fair, when he left the building, nothing was done or decided.
“He was just going at that moment in time to have chats, so the players weren’t aware of it as news broke through.
“Peter Lawwell arrived at the training ground in the afternoon, discussed the possible plans and told me that I was wanted here.
“He told me to prepare the team and if there was an appointment that I’d be assistant manager.”
The scenes at the final whistle at Tynecastle suggest that there’s not too many broken hearts in the Celtic dressing room.
As long as they are getting paid players tend to be happy- if they are involved in the first team they are even happier.
The story of this season has now taken on an extra dynamic, staying on course for 10-in-a-row is all that matters to the fans with Wednesday’s evidence suggesting that their club is still on target.
