Neil Lennon has left the door open for the unlikely introduction of Marvin Compper to first team action.

The defender was signed in January 2018 but after picking up an injury during the winter break in Dubai only managed 80 minutes of football last season.

Playing on the left of a back three at home to Morton in the Scottish Cup, Compper looked far from the dominating force that he had been billed as after signing from RB Leipzig.

The 33-year-old featured in Celtic’s pre-season matches but had to wait until February to sample his first reserve fixture as the ‘young Hoops’ beat Falkirk 4-1 at Cappielow.

Dedryck Boyata, Kris Ajer, Filip Benkovic, Jozo Simunovic and Nir Bitton are ahead of Compper for a place in the Celtic defence but Lennon offered the German some mild encouragement today.

The Celtic boss said: “He could, yeah. He played a development game on Tuesday and I went to see it.

“His attitude was excellent. Scott Allan played as well, and Bayo. I was really pleased with what I saw from the senior boys as well as the younger players.

“At the minute, with the squad being stretched with injuries, it’s good to have bodies and those guys are getting a little bit of match fitness.”

On Monday Celtic play Hearts in the Reserve League with the game kicking off ar 2pm at Cappielow.
