The man who gave Timo Weah his international debut is confident that the on-loan forward can make an impact in Sunday’s Glasgow derby.

Weah made a quick impact at Celtic, coming off the bench to score some important goals and helping to turn the visit to St Johnstone around from one point to three.

Like many loan players he is finding it more difficult to get a game as a new manager looks towards next season and who is more likely to be available.

Weah was on international duty for the USA u-23 side in midweek, getting 85 minutes of their friendly with Holland, with former US national boss Dave Sarachan confident that he can play a role in Sunday’s showdown.

He had his ups and downs in terms of adjusting to the international game,” Sarachan told The Sun.

But he’s got tools that are up to that standard, speed and pace, his technical ability continues to improve and tactically the other area of the learning curve has shown a good trajectory.

He’s still a part of a massive club with PSG but more importantly he plays for Celtic.

He’s in a real pressure cooker with the expectations and I think he has embraced the moment he’s had there. He hasn’t shied away and I think he can push on to even bigger and better things.

As a person he’s eager to make an impression and to be a part of things. I think he understands what it means to play at the next level when it comes to the national team and it seems to have translated with his club.

This weekend will be a good example. He might be too young to even understand what that game really means but I think his starting points are good.

He can sometimes rile up others but he’s passionate and was an instant crowd favourite.

He’s a humble guy. He’s not one to defer to the fact that his father was Footballer of the Year more than once and is now the president of a country.”

Since joining in January Weah has started two matches and made 10 appearances as a substitute, scoring Airdrie United in the Scottish Cup and against St Mirren and St Johnstone in the SPFL.
