Almost from the day that he was appointed as Head of Recruitement Chris Sutton has questioned the ability of Lee Congerton.

With each passing transfer window that questioning turned to criticism as Celtic failed to build on the excellent base of Brendan Rodgers’ first season.

Who is responsible for transfer business is a complex issue involving the top level of the club, the manager and the Head of Recruitment.

In hindsight the January 2018 transfer window was the death knell for the Congerton era. Charly Musonda, Marvin Compper and Jack Hendry contributed virtually nothing with only Scott Bain, brought in as third choice keeper making any impact at the club.

Whether Celtic’s problems were down to budget, identification or the difficulties of bringing players to Scotland is a moot point but there won’t be many tears shed for the departure of Congerton.

It remains to be seen where the former Sunderland and Hamburg scout appears next, it’s not cut and dried that he will end up rejoining the gang down at Leicester City.
