Steve Davis has been warned that his pay slip won’t get him a place in the Sevco team- or even on the bench.
Signing the Southampton veteran on loan in January was looked on as a master-stroke by Steven Gerrard with the other squad members forming a guard of honour as Davis joined the training ground in Tenerife.
After a disastrous debut in the 2-1 defeat at Kilmarnock Davis has worked his way out of the side and failed to make the substitute bench for the Scottish Cup tie at Aberdeen.
The 34-year-old started just one EPL match before being shipped out by Southampton as soon as the January transfer window opened with his Saints deal up at the end of this season.
“I believe Steven Davis will be here next season,” Gerrard told The Sun.
“I have got no doubt he will be an amazing signing, I have got every confidence in Davis and his ability but I have to make decisions on the team and pick on form, and what I see on a daily basis.
“The midfield area has fierce competition right now if you look at our team.
“You have got Ryan Jack in very consistent form, probably playing the best football he has played in his career over the last seven or eight months.
“Scott Arfield contributes numbers in the final third of the pitch, whether it be assists or goals, and he plays as a leader.”
Davis is unlikely to be back in favour for tonight’s SPFL visit to Hibs which gives the Ibrox side the chance to reduce Celtic’s lead at the top of the table to five points.
In their earlier matches this season, when Neil Lennon was in charge the two teams faught out two draws.
