Steven Gerrard had the look of a broken man as he spoke to his club’s TV channel after his side lost 2-0 to Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup at Ibrox.
Unless the rookie boss can mastermind an eight point swing in the SPFL he will finish his first season in management empty handed- the same fate that cost Mark Warburton and Pedro Caixinha their jobs.

After drawing 1-1 at Aberdeen ten days ago the expectation was all on the home side to see off Derek McInnes’ side and book a semi-final place against Celtic at Hampden.
Niall McGinn opened the scoring in the third minute, when Connor McLennan doubled the advantage in the 62nd minute it was obvious that there was only going to be one winner on the night.
Jermain Defoe, Kyle Lafferty and Steve Davis were thrown on but Dons keeper Joe Lewis barely had a save to make.
Gerrard refused to confront his players in the dressing room after the match, preferring the comfort of an in-house interview.
