Brian McClair has posted a touching message following the death of Stevie Chalmers.

Within a week of losing the captain of the Lisbon Lions it was announced that the man who scored the most famous goal in the club’s history had also fallen to dementia.

Chalmers joined Celtic from junior side Ashfield in 1959, playing through the bleak early years of the sixties prior to the dramatic return of Jock Stein.

Alongside Willie Wallace he led the attack in Lisbon, scoring the 85th minute winner that made history rather than a hard luck story.

After a spell at Morton he returned to Celtic to head up Celtic Pools maintaining his link with the club through until retirement.

Despite only winning five international caps Chalmers scored three times for Scotland including one against Brazil in a 1966 friendly.

In 393 Celtic appearances he scored 228 goals making him the fourth highest scorer in the club’s history with only Jimmy McGrory, Bobby Lennox and Henrik Larsson scoring more.
