For no other reason than his contract expires next June, Timothy Castagne is back on Celtic’s transfer radar.

The initial source is The Sunday Times with The Sun picking up on a story that looks as unlikely as Roberto Martinez taking charge of Celtic next season.

Castagne was linked with Celtic in the summer and again in January but is now playing regularly for Atalanta who are sitting in sixth place in Serie A.

With just over a year to go on the contract that he signed after leaving Genk three years ago he is perfectly placed to cash in with a new Atalanta contract or a move elsewhere.

Next summer Belgium will be among the favourites to win the European Championships with stability all important for the squad players looking to break into Martinez’s side.

Having resisted interest from Celtic under Brendan Rodgers it seems highly unlikely that Castagne will be looking at a move to Scotland where the management of Celtic appears to be anyone’s guess.

Over the last two transfer windows Celtic have failed to strengthen the right-back position, a third window waiting on word from Castagne surely isn’t an option.
