Willie Collum believes that VAR will reduce scandal in Scottish football.

The Lanarkshire based referee has certainly been involved in his own share of controversy this season stretching back to September when he failed to notice Allan McGregor kicking out at a grounded Kris Ajer.

In December Aberdeen were awarded two highly questionable penalties against Celtic while Niall McGinn escaped with only a booking for a horrendous over the top attack on Ryan Christie.

When Celtic visited St Johnstone in February Collum missed two penalty box challenges that wiped out Christie and Odsonne Edouard with the French striker stretchered off.

Scottish referees rarely give interviews but after Bobby Madden recently spoke to Radio Clyde Collum was happy to share his views on VAR with BBC Scotland.

“I think it would be easier for players to accept decisions,” he said. “What we’re talking about is the controversy where everybody looking at a replay can see it’s an error.

“It’s a genuine error made by the referee, in perhaps a very difficult situation – that’s then gone and we would hope it would end the scandal, so to speak.”

Collum added: “There’s no doubt they’re for VAR [Scottish referees]. I don’t think there’s any referee in the world who won’t support VAR because it’s about helping the referee to get that decision right.

“We would hope that we don’t make any errors and we don’t need to rely on it. But we know if mistakes happen, and we know they will happen, then we have a safety net there to fall back on.”

This weekend Collum will be in charge of St Mirren’s match against Hamilton Accies.
