Lewis Ferguson has explained his red card lunge at Tom Rogic by saying ‘I was desperate’.

The Aberdeen midfielder got away with a catalogue of attacks on Celtic players during last month’s Scottish Cup semi-final defeat at Hampden before taking things too far.

Right in front of referee Craig Thomson he lunged in late and over the ball on the Australian who was left flat out on the turf as Ferguson took the long walk to the Hampden dressing room.

Fortunately Rogic recovered to score Celtic’s third goal with Ferguson left to reflect on the impact that he made at the National Stadium.

These moments have made me a stronger player and a better person,” he explained to The Sun. “It’s something that we can all learn from and become better players.

It was just frustration from myself. I was desperate. You know how it is in such a high profile game and I felt as if the game was getting away from us and I was trying to make something happen.”

Ferguson will come up against Rogic again on Saturday when Celtic visit Pittodrie looking for a point to clinch the SPFL title for the eighth season running.

Yesterday Ferguson was named among the four nominees for the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year with Kris Ajer a surprising omission from the list.
