Celtic would pay a fee of less than £300,000 to sign Luca Connell.

The midfielder seems certain to leave Bolton after the club went into administration with a move to Celtic offering an escape from League One football and the prospect of playing in Europe.

Connell played in 10 Championship matches for Bolton last season, providing one of the few bright spots in a season that ended with relegation and administration.

The Bolton News reveals:

It is estimated that Bolton would get around £300,000 at tribunal for the Liverpool-born midfielder, who has been with the club since the age of nine.

Wanderers secured a best possible price by triggering a 12-month extension to his scholarship contract last month – but the money they stand to make would be drastically reduced if he chooses to play his football north of the border with either Celtic or Rangers.

Despite being born in Liverpool Connell has played for Ireland at u-17 and u-19 level.

The defender has been with Mick McCarthy’s full squad in Portugal preparing for the European Championship qualifiers with the FAI keen to give him a competitive appearance to rule out switching to England after losing out on Declan Rice this season.

Celtic were able to sign Moussa Dembele for a cut price development fee in 2016 and have been linked with a similar move for West Brom midfielder Rekeem Harper.
