First Glasgow derby date in doubt

The date of the first Glasgow derby of the new season is already in doubt after the SPFL repeated the planning mistake of last season.

Celtic are scheduled to visit Ibrox on Saturday August 31, the fourth round of fixtures but if either side is involved in the play-off round of the Europa League the match will have to be put back a day.

With only 800 Celtic fans getting tickets for the match it’s not much of an issue for hoops fans but in terms of travel and policing it becomes a headache for the authorities that surely could have been avoided.

Adding to that weekend is the timing of the transfer window which has been slid back to Monday September 2 to allow clubs to complete business over the weekend.

Celtic will kick off the season at home to St Johnstone, face Motherwell away then host Hearts before their trip to Ibrox. If successful the hoops will be playing European qualifiers in the midweeks between those fixtures.

After the Ibrox match there is an international break with the SPFL campaign resuming with a trip to face Hamilton Accies on the plastic of New Douglas Park.
