Motherwell’s rush to make a statement returns to haunt them according to Daily Record report

|

The Daily Record has claimed that David Turnbull has rejected the personal terms on offer to move to Celtic.

On Wednesday night Motherwell took the highly unusual step of going public to say that they had accepted an offer from Celtic but with terms still to be agreed with the player that always looked a questionable strategy.

With reports of interest from English clubs the job of the players’ agent is to maximise income with all of those clubs alerted to the news that Motherwell’s asking price had been met.

No news emerged yesterday but while the Evening Times claimed at lunchtime that the midfielder was undergoing a medical the Daily Record has taken things in a different direction, they report:

The Premiership champions had a £3million bid accepted by the Fir Park side on Wednesday and hoped to get the switch over the line today.

But Record Sport can reveal the 19-year-old’s representatives have turned down a lucrative contract offer and are now touting the youngster to clubs in England.

Celtic chiefs are furious with the player’s agent but insist they will not be used as a bargaining tool for a move down south.

It remains to be seen how the issue is played out with the spotlight on the players agent.

If they can’t find a better offer they will have to return to talks with Celtic or Plan Z take their client back to Motherwell where his basic wage is likely to be around £1,000/week with two years left to run.

Having proclaimed the benefits of the offer from Celtic Motherwell will have to reflect if it was worthwhile racing to get the story out first.
